Wasmutta Family Update 9.29.17
Posted on 10/04/2017

Good morning, Wamsutta Families.  On behalf of the staff, I would like to thank the many families who could attend our Curriculum Night.  Although I heard from many families that thought the evening was a success, we welcome any feedback that might help us improve this event.  If you were unable to make it, and would like to arrange a meeting with your child’s teachers, please call the main office.

  1. Backpack Alert:  After school activities available at the Attleboro Youth Center went home to all students today.  We also have attachments for our school and family flu clinic (and required insurance form), and information on the Rotary Club’s Walkabout Event.
  2. Next Friday, October 6th will be a ½ day for students.  Dismissal will be at 11:30.
  3. Our PTO is leading the way for two important fundraisers.  The first begins Monday – our second annual Penny War.  Copies of the Penny War rules and prize available to the winning grade will be distributed Monday to all students, and we will start collecting change during lunch.  The second starts in November, but we need your help to get ready for it.  From our PTO:

Last year our major School Fall Fundraiser was a Gift Card Calendar Raffle for the month of November. Each day during the month a name will be drawn to win a prize. Last year we were able to raise over $4,000 for the students. We are asking for parents to help solicit or purchase a gift card to help in this endeavor. No amount is too big and no amount too small. Any type of gift card is acceptable. This would be a perfect time to help out local businesses (bookstores, restaurants, stores, etc.) or maybe promote your own business and at the same time help support our children. We would need to have all donations in to the school by October 11th. You can drop off any donations to the school in an envelope and mark it PTO Calendar Raffle. Thank you so very much for your support!

  1. AHS Administration and current students will be coming to WMS next Friday for a presentation for our 7th and 8th graders.  We want students to start thinking about the next steps in their educations and this event will help keep them informed of their options.
  1. Our After-School Activities will begin October 10th.  A finalized list of offerings and times will be emailed home midweek next week, along with late bus information.  We will also conduct a musical instrument expo for all 5th graders next week, and hope to generate interest in our Beginner Band offerings.  Any questions can be emailed to Mr. Dodge (jdodge@attleboroschools.com) regarding the Band.
  1. Walk to School Day will be next Wednesday, October 4th.  The students who walk or ride to school will arrive to some free goodies from Mr. Lamore and I that morning.  We wish traffic and other safety concerns were lessened so that more students could make this  healthy choice, and fully understand families’ reticence to have their children walk or ride.  That said, for those who can and do, we have some prizes available.
  1. The award-winning film, Screenagers: Growing Up In The Digital Age, will be screened at the Bray Auditorium at AHS on Wednesday, October 11th at 6:30 PM.  It probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director's own, and depicts struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists, solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.  The movie is appropriate for children grade three and up with parent consent and all parents/guardians are welcome to attend.  Common Sense Media has reviews for parents/guardians to learn more about the documentary. This link is available for parents/guardians who are deciding if the documentary is appropriate for their children to watch.
  1. REPEAT NOTICE:  The PTO’s 8th Grade Subcommittee’s first meeting will be Wednesday, October 4th at 6 PM here in our Library.  The many activities we offer our 8th grade students (Lock-in, Basketball Game, Canobie Lake Trip, Social) do not happen without our dedicated 8th grade teachers and significant family support.  Please join Mr. Lamore if you can help.
  1. REPEAT NOTICE:  The first District Travel Meeting will be Tuesday, October 3rd at 6:30 PM at Attleboro High School.

Thank you as always for your time and attention.
