Wamsutta Family Update 03/09/2018
Posted on 03/12/2018
Good afternoon Wamsutta Families.
Backpack Alert and Digital Notices:  Although nothing went home on paper today, both information for next year’s transportation and sign-up forms for our Trivia Night went home earlier in the week.  Both are attached in case you missed it.
  1. March’s Curriculum Calendar can be seen on our website or linked to here: https://goo.gl/J2NBxh
  2. Our PTO will meet next Tuesday at 6:30 in our library.  Please join us if you can.
  3. Term 2 closes next Tuesday, March 13.  Grades will be finalized in Aspen by the end of the day on the 16th, with Report Cards sent home with students on the 21st.
  4. The Attleboro Girls Middle School Volleyball Program will hold an additional registration on Saturday 11-1pm in the AHS Gym Lobby. The cost to participate is $35 only cash/money orders are accepted.  This is to make up for the one cancelled last week due to weather.
  5. 5th Grade:  The Healthy Choices Fair will return to WMS on the Wednesday, the 14th from 8-10:30 AM.  This event is sponsored by Sturdy Hospital, and both a long running and popular program with our students.  Information will be sent home on paper just for 5th graders today with information and your invite should you wish to check it out.  We follow with another session of our Jr. Conservation Commissioner Program on Friday, the 16th.
  6. 8th Grade:  Field trip next Wednesday, the 14th, with the lock-in on Friday, March 23rd
  7. All Grades:  Our first diversity potluck dinner will be on Wednesday the 21st, with Trivia Night following on Tuesday, the 27th.  For our potluck on the 21st, families are already committed to bringing koshary, hummus, French meat pies, empanadas, arroz con dulce, pizza and strawberry shortcake.  We’d like all the forms back by next Friday the 16th, as we need a few days to try to figure out all the set up.  We’d love to see you at either or both.
Some families may be wondering if the school has anything planned for March 14th.  As many of you know, there has been significant discussion among some students, particularly at the High School level, of having a student-led protest or event of some kind on this day to acknowledge the most-recent school violence in Parkland, Florida.  I have reached out to all our teaching staff and many students to gauge student thinking on the matter, and, so far as I am aware, there are no plans for a student-led protest or event here.  That said, the students I have spoken to would like to do something to recognize this student movement, yet both they and I understand that “something” looks very different for a 5th grader than an 8th grader.  Taking these factors into account, during last block on Wednesday, all students can participate in an Acts of Kindness exercise.  For 5th and 6th graders, this will be tied into our PBIS initiative, where students are already focused on doing positive things for their classmates and school, rather than as a response to Parkland.  In 7th and 8th, we will fdo something similar, but follow the student lead and talk about the national student response to the violence in Florida should students be looking to discuss it.  I realize much can change in a few days, but this is our school’s plan at this point.  I will update as necessary next week.
Thank you as always for your time and attention.
