Wamsutta Family Update 01/31/2020
Posted on 01/31/2020

Good morning, Wamsutta Families.  I have a very important update this week.

BACKPACK ALERT AND DIGITAL NOTICES:

There are flyers going home on paper to all 6th graders about immunization requirements for next year and a notice from Attleboro Youth Baseball for all grades.  Our only digital notice is a reminder on how to buy tickets for WMS Night at the NE Generals game on Saturday the 8th.

Other items:

1.       8th Grade Families:  I saw many of our students at both the Welcome Night and the Blue Pride Open House last night, which was great.  Our next step is the actual course selection process.  The 9th grade program of studies is available here.  I highly recommend you begin to review the program this weekend.  On Monday, paper copies will be distributed to all students.  Two of our teachers, Ms. Bellucci and Ms. Ramos, are highly experienced with this process, and will go over the program with all students on Monday.  Then you have a few days to talk with your student or ask any questions of me before Thursday when the High School guidance staff will be here to actually enter the requests with students.  Students are expected to bring back the course request sheet itself on Thursday, which is located at the end of the 9th grade program of studies.  I will send a reminder to all families on Tuesday about this.

2.       To help facilitate the above process on Thursday, we will be changing our schedule.  We will observe our normal Thursday schedule on Wednesday, and our normal Wednesday schedule will be on Thursday.  Except for students having to remember if they need to bring gym clothes on a different day, it should be minimally disruptive to students.  Our after-school schedule will be unaffected.  I’ll include this in my email reminder on Tuesday, and we’ll announce in the mornings for students as well.

3.       ALICE Safety Protocols:  Mr. Heal and I have met with all the grade levels to discuss what is changing in terms of our safety drills.  We emphasized that fire drills and shelters-in-place, drills that our students know well already, will be unchanged.  Where we will change is when we enter lockdown.  Next Wednesday, we will be conducting a lockdown drill that will be more like a walk-through than an actual drill.  Teachers will lead discussions with students for about 15 minutes about the decision-making process they will go through at an actual drill or real emergency and what the students should expect.  This process will be continued over the next months in all of the areas students are in during a regular school week.  We hope that this will provide students multiple opportunities to review the ALICE protocol in each area of the building in a low stress way.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

4.       Our Dance scheduled for next Thursday has been postponed.  We hope to do it the last Friday in February, but it is not set in stone yet.  Stay tuned.

5.       SECOND NOTICE:  The PTO, along with the generosity of Bliss Dairy, will be hosting an ice cream sundae celebration on February 7.  If your child has any dietary restrictions that you are concerned about, just let me know.  There are never any nuts, and we have lactose-free options available as well.

DATES TO REMEMBER:

·         Thursday, February 6:  AHS Course Selection for 8th Graders

·         Friday, February 7:  Ice Cream Sundaes for WMS Students

·         Saturday, February 8:  WMS Night at New England Sports Village

·         Tuesday, February 11:  PTO Meeting at 6:30

·         Friday, February 14:  ½ Day for Students / Dismissal at 11:30

·         February 17-21:  No School, February Break

I know I will see many of you tonight for the Student v. Faculty Basketball game.  We are sold out and we cannot offer tickets at the door.  It promises to be a great event, and, as I will mention tonight, it would not be possible without the effort of so many staff, students, and families.  Thank you all for your hard work.

Thank you as always for your time.
