Wamsutta Family Update 05/08/2020
Posted on 05/08/2020

Good morning WMS students and families.  I hope everyone is doing ok.

I have attached above and linked below the learning plans for next week.

Grade 5

Grade 6

Grade 7

Grade 8

Please continue to do your best on these plans.  When you need help, or cannot get something done, please just let the teachers know.  All in all, I am impressed with how many students (with their families’ support) are continuing to plug away to try to make the best of this.  Thank you all for your efforts.  As a parent trying to do remote learning with my two small children, I am well aware of the difficulties presented.  In other news:

1.       CURRENT 6th GRADE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES:  We have mailed home some health forms that you will need to have filled out when you return as 7th graders.  When complete, you can mail them to WMS or just hang on to them to drop off whenever we come back.

2.       GRADES IN TERM 3:  We finally have some finality on all of this.  Students should be receiving unweighted scores for Term 3 in Aspen to give families a sense of whether students are meeting teacher expectations.  These grades are unweighted and designed to enhance the feedback that students get via Google classroom, Google Meet, and email that is sometimes hard for families to stay on top of.

3.       GRADES FOR END OF TERM 3:  Following state guidance, students will receive either a “CR” (credit) or “NC” (no credit) along with teacher comments in the Term 3 column on report cards.

4.       END OF YEAR GRADES:  Again following state guidance, these grades will be based on the average from Term 1 and Term 2, with consideration of student performance during the remote learning phase of the year.  This consideration will only enhance student year end grades, not detract from them.

5.       If you have any questions on grading, please let me know.

This pattern we are in will continue up to the learning plans scheduled to be published on June 5th.  At that time, we will start a transition to non-digital learning options and summer enrichment work as well as getting staff and students back in the building to drop off and pick up things before the end of the school year.  June 10th is tentatively scheduled for a Chromebook drop off day for those students who have borrowed them.  This will not apply to current 5th graders.  We will also be scheduling days for grade levels to pick up things and say goodbye to staff for summer, and a day (or two) when we can honor and celebrate our 8th graders on their way to High School.  Again, stay tuned for specifics.

Thank you for your time and I wish you and your loved ones patience and good health.

Joseph Connor, WMS
