Wamsutta Family Update 09/21/2018
Posted on 09/21/2018
Good morning, Wamsutta families.
Another long email this week with a great deal of important information:
Backpack Alert and Digital Notices:  Two papers are going home in backpacks.  The first is the Picture Day packet with information for the pictures to be taken on Wednesday.  You may have received an email from Lifetouch about it already.  Ordering can be done online or through the order form distributed today.  Also going home is a letter about our Bring Your Own Device program, with a form you need to fill out if you want your child to use their device during the school day.  While all the details are in the letter, which is attached here as well, the short story is that if you have a device at home (with a keyboard is strongly preferred) your student can use it at the teacher’s discretion during the school day.  Also attached is the agenda for our Curriculum Night and Open House.
1.       Curriculum Night and Open House will be Wednesday, September 26th at 6 PM.  Details are attached, but the gist of it is this:  Grade 5 families report to the café at 6 PM, and all other families can report directly to the appropriate grade cluster.  The teachers will all present themselves and their expectations for the first hour, and then we will have a less formal open house hour.  We do this so that families with students in multiple grade levels have a chance to touch base with all their children’s teachers.  We hope to see everyone there.
2.       Our Book Fair is cranking up today and run through the 27th.  All students will have a chance to visit the Fair next week during the school day.  The Fair will also run during Curriculum Night and credit cards are accepted.   An on-line fair will also be available and will run through September 28th.   It can be accessed through this link:https://bit.ly/2O3FRKo.  All proceeds go to the purchase of books for the Wamsutta Library.
3.       On Tuesday morning, all WMS students will take part in a presentation from representatives from the Sandy Hook Promise organization to promote an initiative called Start With Hello, designed to reduce children’s feelings of isolation.  More information can be found here:  https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/startwithhelloweek.   We will be following up on this presentation with grade level activities led by teachers and student-led activities as part of our HOPE club, and you will hear about more of both activities over the next months.
4.       Thanks to our volunteers from Sensata, our Robotics Club will be beginning on October 17th, and held weekly on Wednesdays at 1:20.  Fifth and sixth grade students will be given the opportunity to apply for a spot in the club, as there is often more interest than openings.  The applications will be given out in homerooms.  Applications will be due October 3rd and students will be notified by October 10th if they will be in the first group. An equal amount of students from each homeroom will be chosen based on the effort put into the application. There will be 4 different sessions throughout the year for 5th grade and 1 longer session for sixth grade. We look forward to watching the students work through the scientific process.
5.       PTO News:  We have very few Celtics tickets left for anyone still interested.  Our Cookies and More fundraiser will also continue until October 10th.
6.       There are two district-wide student travel meetings coming up.  You should have received an email directly from the folks who run these programs already.  The first will be a meeting on Tuesday, September 25th at 6 PM in the Brennan Middle School library to introduce the Middle School International Travel Program.  You can come see where they will be headed in 2019, 2020 and 2021. During the year the trip is run, if your child is in grades 6-8, they are eligible.  Families, you may register for the trips and join your child on these programs as well.  The second is an informational meeting for all District Travel opportunities Tuesday, October 23rd at 6 PM at AHS Bray Auditorium and concerns our current 7th and 8thgraders.  This meeting will provide you with all high school travel opportunities that will be offered to your son/daughter for the upcoming years.  We also have a few spots left open to this year's current 8th graders for the spring 2019 Washington D.C. trip.   If you are interested in enrolling in order to ensure your child a spot  visit our tour website at www.efexploreamerica.com/enroll and enter the WMS school ID:  2099998WN

Lastly, we need more family representation on our School Council.  We meet five times per year, usually on Mondays at 6 PM, meetings are kept to an hour or less, and there is no homework.  We have teacher and community representatives already on board.  We discuss our budget, our school improvement plans, and the state of our school.  We have been fortunate to have many family volunteers in the past and need 3 or 4 people to keep our momentum going.  Interested persons should contact me directly.
Thank you as always for your time and attention.
